One of the challenges that community leaders face is demonstrate values. Many people understand that value alignment is one of the effective ways to attract and rally “people like us do things like this”. Often they know what values are but don’t really understand how to use them to build a community they want to see.
There is a confusion about values.
There are at least two kinds of values: expression values and operating values.
In our local neighborhood school, the core values are “be kind, be safe, be responsible”. Most of the children can read these words, but don’t necessarily know what actions and behaviors are considered being kind, safe and responsible. When adults explain them, things get even more complicated.
If there are too many values to talk about and learn, we might end up not having any to focus on and practice.
