Mourning a loss helps us live better lives. When we lose someone, a relationship, or hope, we mourn.
Mourning is a process that we need to go through before we can truly let go and move on. It is the acceptance of our feelings: sadness, pain, and suffering, and how much we wish things could've been different.
It's best to mourn with others. Feel the feelings can be unbearable when mourning alone. But Witnessing other people mourning permits us to grieve, too. It helps us let go of fear and shame when expressing the most profound feelings inside us.
Until we process the pain and suffering we carry, it's challenging to shift to empathy and compassion toward ourselves, let alone others.
