Our local youth league is organizing a sports experience event. Kids are so excited because they get to see and experience what a pro team gets to do every day.
The league sent the invitation to each team where the team lead are parent volunteers. The event is straightforward but the organization around it is not: registration is only between the league and teams. It drives team lead to get consensus from all the parents in each team. Then parents who agree with the event need to register their children individually online. Until that happens, the team registration isn’t done.
It's complicated.
When something goes wrong which happens a lot, people need to lean in the support system and get it resolved on time. When that doesn’t happen, parents fall through and bring the entire team down.
Organizing and volunteering are simply doing a job. But doing it with care is how we might have a chance to simplify the process and make things better for everyone.
Doing a job is not leading. Making it better is.
